5 Tips To Stay Safe When Lighting Fireworks

Did you buy some fireworks this year, but feel a bit nervous about setting them off because you have safety concerns? It's possible for everyone to be safe and have an enjoyable show if you fire these tips.

Have A Water Source Nearby

It's crucial that you always have some sort of water source nearby when lighting fireworks. This could be water in a bucket that is ready to be doused onto a firework, or a hose that is turned on with a spray nozzle. You never know when things are going to go wrong, and having water on standby will allow you to quickly deal with an unintentional fire. Don't have easy access to water? You can even have a fire extinguisher nearby to stay safe.

Wear Safety Gear When Lighting Fireworks

You'll also want to make sure that you are protected when lighting off fireworks by wearing the proper safety gear. Eye protection is important, so wear safety glasses just in case something were to go off near your face. You should also wear closed toed shoes to protect your feet.

Have A First Aid Kid Nearby

You always want to be prepared for an emergency, which is why you want a first aid kit nearby. You'll need items to help treat burns, like aloe vera, that will help soothe your skin. Antibiotic ointment will also help, along with gauze to cover the burn. Eye washing supplies can also help if something were to get into your eyes.

Brace Fireworks Before Lighting

When lighting fireworks, it's important to brace them so that they will not tip over when they are going off. You can do this with bricks that surround the firework and will hold it upward, or securing the firework to a stake that is in the ground. You'll also want to place the firework on a hard and flat surface when possible. It is okay to use a large piece of wood for lighting the fireworks, since you can even use that wood to secure the fireworks in place.

Douse Duds With Water

If you do light a firework off and it does not go off, make sure to douse it with water to ensure that it doesn't go off unexpectedly. Treat all fireworks as if they are live until you have covered them with water, because they can go off long after you've lit the fuse.
